Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for six months in 1569. The Castle is open to visitors from the beginning of March until the end of October and includes a Tea Room and recently reinstated gardens. Visit England's highest single-drop waterfall - Hardraw Force - only two miles away from the property. You can actually walk behind the waterfall, which is situated in the wooded grounds of the Green Dragon Inn. Two outdoor events - The Gathering (music festival) and the Hardraw Scaur Brass Band  Contest - are held there each year in a natural outdoor amphitheatre. The famous Aysgarth Falls is not far away where the River Ure cascades over three spectacular falls in a tree lined gorge. Worth a visit for a day out, along with a visit to Hamilton's Tea Room which offers mouth watering cream teas and excellent quality food very reasonably priced.  www.lydits.co.uk
